Telangana Reuters, 10 October 2026 | Hyderabad : Central Subsidy of up to ₹78,000 under PM Surya Ghar – TGSPDCL Urges Consumers to Avail Rooftop Solar Benefits

The Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) has appealed to domestic electricity consumers to install rooftop solar systems at their homes to reduce electricity bills and contribute to environmental protection. The Central Government’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to eligible domestic consumers. TGSPDCL stated that increased adoption of solar energy would promote clean energy usage while providing consumers with an opportunity to reduce their electricity expenses.
Central Subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for a 3 kW Rooftop Solar System
Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, eligible domestic consumers can receive a maximum Central subsidy of ₹78,000 for installing a rooftop solar system with a capacity of 3 kWp. Financial assistance is provided at ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kWp and ₹18,000 per kW for the additional 1 kWp. No additional Central subsidy is available for capacity exceeding 3 kWp. Consumers must comply with the scheme’s eligibility criteria and technical standards to qualify for the subsidy.

Financial assistance is also available, subject to the prescribed guidelines, for rooftop solar installations undertaken by Group Housing Societies and Resident Welfare Associations (GHS/RWAs) to meet the electricity requirements of common facilities, including electric vehicle (EV) charging. Assistance is provided at ₹18,000 per kW for capacities up to 500 kWp, subject to the prescribed limit of 3 kWp per household. To qualify for the subsidy, installations must comply with the scheme’s requirements, including the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR), which mandates the use of solar modules manufactured using domestically produced solar cells.
Apply Online Through the Official Portal
Consumers can apply through the official PM Surya Ghar website: https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in. They must first register on the portal using their mobile number and electricity connection details, select the concerned electricity distribution company, and submit the application. After obtaining the necessary approvals, consumers should install the rooftop solar system through a vendor registered under the scheme. They must then complete the prescribed net-metering, inspection and commissioning procedures and submit the required details on the portal. Following verification of eligibility and completion of the prescribed formalities, the subsidy will be credited directly to the beneficiary’s bank account, in accordance with the scheme guidelines.
TGSPDCL Takes Special Measures to Facilitate Consumers.
TGSPDCL has taken several measures to simplify the rooftop solar installation process. The company has integrated its portal with PM Surya Ghar Portal 2.0. It has implemented exemptions from technical feasibility studies for systems up to 10 kWp and automatic load enhancement, in accordance with the applicable provisions. The inspection process has been streamlined to facilitate faster installations, and load enhancement charges can be collected through subsequent electricity bills. Applicable exemptions from the submission of prescribed documents, including the net-metering agreement, have also been implemented.
An application fee exemption is available for systems up to 10 kWp for applications registered between 22 June 2026 and 31 March 2027, subject to the applicable conditions. TGSPDCL also conducts meetings with solar vendors, TGREDCO and REC officials on the first Wednesday of every month to review implementation and resolve issues related to the scheme.
Seva Setu Camps to Promote Public Awareness
TGSPDCL conducted Seva Setu awareness camps at the division level on 2, 3 and 4 October 2026 to explain the benefits of the scheme to consumers. The camps featured live demonstrations of online registration and mobile application usage. Consumers who had already installed rooftop solar systems shared their experiences and helped address queries from the public. Extensive awareness campaigns were also conducted through local media, newspapers and social media platforms to help consumers understand the application process and avail themselves of the scheme’s benefits.
Rooftop Solar for 20.33 Lakh Households – Telangana Government Initiative
To expand renewable energy usage across the state, the Telangana Government approved the installation of rooftop solar systems with a cumulative capacity of 4,066 MW for 20.33 lakh households under the Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model on 15 November 2025. TGREDCO is the implementing agency for this programme. The Gruha Jyothi scheme has been linked with PM Surya Ghar.
Under this initiative, 10,11,533 households within the TGSPDCL jurisdiction have been identified, with a targeted capacity of 2,023 MW. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has accorded in-principle approval for 20,175 solar installations in the first phase.
₹943.47 Crore Sanctioned for Village Solarisation
To promote clean energy usage in rural areas, the Telangana Government accorded administrative sanction of ₹943.47 crore through G.O.Rt. No. 23, dated 09.05.2025, and G.O.Rt. No. 49, dated 17.11.2025.
The programme covers 40,349 households across 80 villages, with an estimated solar capacity of approximately 81 MW. Of these, 14,898 households across 43 villages fall under the TGSPDCL jurisdiction.
In addition, solar facilities are planned for 16,805 agricultural pump sets, with an estimated capacity of approximately 126 MW. Of these, 8,964 agricultural pump sets fall under the TGSPDCL jurisdiction.
Progress of Solar Energy Programmes under TGSPDCL
As of 9 October 2026, TGSPDCL recorded 30,259 registrations under the net-metering category, with 29,777 systems installed and a capacity of 640.852 MW. Under PM Surya Ghar, 44,662 registrations were recorded, with 29,816 systems installed and a capacity of 125.613 MW.
Under the Model Solar Village programme, 4,335 registrations were recorded, with 3,190 installations and a capacity of 6.407 MW. Under PM-KUSUM Component-A, 720 Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) were recorded, with 35 installations and a capacity of 59 MW.
According to TGSPDCL data, the combined figures across these categories stood at 79,976
registrations, 62,818 installations and a total capacity of 831.872 MW.
Solar Energy for Electricity Savings and Environmental Protection
Rooftop solar enables domestic consumers to generate a portion of their electricity requirements independently, thereby reducing the amount of electricity drawn from the grid. Where solar generation exceeds consumption, consumers may receive benefits for surplus electricity supplied to the grid, subject to applicable regulations and net-metering arrangements. By reducing dependence on conventional energy sources and promoting clean energy usage, rooftop solar also contributes to environmental protection.
